In 1796 he was candidate for President and lost by 3 votes, but, through a flaw in the Constitution, became Vice President.In 1800 Thomas Jefferson became the 3rd President of the United States. He slashed Army and Navy expenditures, cut the budget, eliminated the whiskey tax (cool!) and still reduced the national debt by a third!Thomas Jefferson , President from 1800-1809, died on July 4th, 1826 .
